Cosmos and Cominati join up for a fantastic recital at the Manoel

Malta’s most dynamic chamber group, the Cosmos Wind Ensemble, joins forces with the dazzling Italian pianist Roberto Cominati to present Cosmic Cominati at the Manoel on Tuesday 20th May at 8pm. The concert, a celebration of classics for winds and piano will feature works by Chopin, Nielsen and Grammy award winning jazz composer Paquito D’Rivera. The musicians will take the stage together to close the programme with Mozart’s evergreen Serenade for Winds and Piano.

Born in Naples in 1969, Roberto Cominati is now one of Italy’s leading pianists and frequent performer at the Manoel. He is invited to perform in the most prestigious venues and festivals and has appeared with leading European orchestras as well as in Japan and Australia, under the baton of important conductors, among which sir Simon Rattle, Andrey Boreyko, Leon Fleisher, Daniel Harding, Eliahu Inbal, Yuri Ahronovitch,Gabriele Ferro,Michele Mariotti,David Robertson, Aleksandr Lazarev. In January 2012 has been released his new Cd’s of complete solo piano music of Maurice Ravel.

The Cosmos Wind Ensemble brings together five Malta – based musicians, in the country’s most dynamic chamber music ensemble. The group features Rebecca Hall (flute), John McDonough (oboe), Godfrey Mifsud (clarinet), Ulrike Buhlmann (bassoon) and José García Gutiérrez (french horn). As the musicians come from all over the world, the name Cosmos reflects and celebrates their diverse backgrounds.

All of the members of the ensemble perform regularly as soloists and orchestral musicians with the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra. Since being founded in 2005, the ensemble has presented performances in Malta, as well as representing the country abroad. With its strong interest in the promotion of new compositions, especially Maltese composers, the group has premiered by Camilleri, Zammit, Pace and Cassar.

The programme of Tuesday 20th May includes Quintet for Winds op.43 by Carl Nielsen, Aires Tropicales by Paquito d’Rivera, Sonata in C Major K.330 by W.A. Mozart, Ballade no.1 in G minor by F. Chopin and Quintet in E flat major for Piano and Winds K. 452 by W. A. Mozart.
