St James Cavalier

Following her participation in Divergent Thinkers in 2012 at St. James Cavalier, Giola Cassar was awarded her first solo exhibition in this same gallery, which will be inaugurated on 10th April 2015 and is entitled I know I don’t.’

This is an exhibition which explores the themes of identity, memory and the idiosyncratic things that make a person unique and identifiable to others. This exhibition brings together two bodies of work; Portrayal and Someone I Knew.

In Portrayal, Giola seeks to explore the concept of identity through the most malleable of features – the hair. In some ways, Portrayal, apart from seeking to touch upon Giola’s bond with her mother, is also a representation of the current state of her hair, the preservation of it captured through the lens, and the reflection that the hair will actually outlive the artist, both in the photograph, as well as in its true form.

In Someone I Knew, the focus shifts from the identity to the complex path of memory. The character, Sam, is a representation of someone we have loved and lost through the passage of time. Seeking to explore the transitions that take place throughout a relationship and memories that these encounters leave behind.

Giola’s work aims to explore the identity through the self and the other, in the space and time we live in. Intrigued by this ongoing struggle of adjusting and finding different places and roles in the world, Giola Cassar makes use of her personal experiences and tries to translate them into universal ones.

Following her studies for a B.A. in Photography (Contemporary Practice) at the University for the Creative Arts (UCA) in Rochester, UK, Giola is currently reading a Master’s Degree in Photography at the University of Brighton. Giola has previously exhibited in China and London, apart from participating in other exhibitions, locally.
