The upcoming Flagship Event for Commedia dell’Arte Day 2018 is bringing performances, masterclasses, and mask-making workshops.
Under the patronage of UNESCO and the support of Teatru Malta, the newly launched national theatre, will commemorate the prestigious art form and highly regarded specimen of intangible world heritage. On the 25th of February, the flagship day for Commedia dell’Arte 2018 will be hosted by Europe’s Capital of Culture for 2018. Teatru Malta takes on ‘Il-Klassi tas-Surmast’ as a yearly event, which will see the promotion of masterclasses and performances produced by a master of a specifically selected theatrical art form.

A series of workshops, debates, and performances will be led by none other than the world class Italian Arlecchino, Claudia Contin Arlecchino, arguably the most famous female Commedia dell’Arte practitioner in Europe. She has effortlessly mastered the very masculine role of Arlecchino, to headline the string of events for this year’s edition that would not be possible without the support of collaborators, Żararti, SAT, UOM, MCAST and the Italian Embassy.
Teatru Malta firmly believes that this European art form should be celebrated amongst the up-and-coming generation of Maltese actors, performers, and visual artists. “Besides producing new work, Teatru Malta strives to be an advocate for theatre. We are very proud to be getting a world renowned master over. As Europeans, Commedia dell’arte forms a beautiful part of our history and our theatrical foundations. By working with Claudia Contin Arlecchino, our commitment to give theatre makers and students these first-rate opportunities is a as plain as the nose on Pantalone’s face,” said Sean Buhagiar, artistic director of Teatru Malta.
Narcy Calamatta, a Maltese veteran actor, self-taught Pantalone and director of Żararti, expresses his sheer delight over the events to come and the arrival of the commedia dell’arte master herself: “Finally she is here – the world renowned guru of Commedia dell’Arte Claudia Contin Arlecchino. Her two original shows are not to be missed! I have been working on this for years, and now thanks to the collaboration of Teatru Malta, theatre lovers deserve to enjoy the maestra’s masterclasses, workshops and performances. A rare occasion to enjoy the world
renowned performances of Claudia Contin Arlecchino.”
On Friday 23rd and Monday 26th February, Claudia Contin Arlecchino will be giving a two-part workshop at the Malta Society of Arts, to a small number of sculptors on the traditional art of wooden mask mould-making, and leather treatment. On Friday evening, a public debate at the Malta Society of Arts will follow, focusing on the function and relevance of Commedia dell’Arte in today’s society.
On Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th February, workshops for performing arts students and actors will take place at Robert Samut Hall. Tickets are available for the two performances: Gli Abitanti di Arlecchinia , and Arlecchino e il Suo Doppio which will be performed by the master herself on Saturday and Sunday night respectively at Robert Samut hall.
Seating for all events is limited, so the organisers advise to reserve tickets well ahead of time. For any queries related to attendance, participation and booking, see the website of Teatru Malta.
