Ever dreamt of being an overnight success? If you have… keep dreaming! It’s the closest you are going to get. Because that’s what “overnight success” is: a pretty little pink castle in the air.

There is a reason why the road to accomplishment is the one less travelled. Success takes a lot of work – hard, unpaid slog, long hours of self-education, working with great coaches, setting things up, studying and learning, testing and trying things, failing and starting all over. If you do things most people are unwilling to do today, you can have a lifestyle most of them  are unable to lead tomorrow.

Few are willing to go an extra mile or to even consider it, because it pushes you out of your comfort zone. Risking something. Being unsure. It feels much easier to stay in the hole you are today and dealing with the devil you know, rather than the one you don’t. Most people prefer to stay with the herd, the anonymity of the flock, and move around as they are told to do. This is the single best way to never get anywhere in life. Being a sheep is a guaranteed success killer.

Everyone talks about success and wishes they were successful, but very few are ready to do what it takes to really be a winner. Whatever you do, however hard you try, you will never get to break them out of their comfort zone and their set ways of thinking.

But if you’re ready to be different, pay attention to this:

Rule #1: Never waste time on things you cannot change

What’s the point in flogging a dead horse, right? It’s just an exercise in desperation. There is one thing however, that is worth directing every single ounce of your energy at. And that’s yourself!

You are in charge of your own destiny. I don’t care how conditioned you have been to think otherwise, and how much you like to blame Fate, Karma, or Luck for what happens to you during the course of your existence. You are responsible for where you are today and all the crap that comes your way.

Is that clear yet?

Pride is not your friend. Neither is your complacency. So, stand up and be counted. Take charge. Why are you letting yourself go with the flow? Start doing things in your life that are worth doing. Take responsibility for your actions.

Rule #2: Every single day, take one step closer to your goal

Only one. But a definite one. Every day. Without fail. One small but sure step every day will add up to 365 steps a year. That’s definitely nothing to be sniffed at. Anything that detracts from that goal needs to be removed. Out the window. Disposed of. Dumpster Dreamland. You do not have any time to waste (see rule #1 above). You think you can afford to, but you can’t. Time is never a friend. So ding ding! Wake the hell up!

Which naturally leads to the next rule.

Rule #3: Be ruthless with your time

Time is absolutely your most precious commodity. It took me years to grasp the gravity of this very simple concept. Time is free, but it’s priceless. You can always have more money, but you will never have more time.

Yesterday cannot come back. We have no control over the things that have passed us by. Yet we can learn from what we did yesterday and make tomorrow a better day. So make every second count. Don’t waste time on the inconsequential or on people who bring you down. Spend it doing things you love with people you love. Life is all about becoming a better person as you journey along. Take a look around you and see where you are right now and take a look at where you need to go. And this takes us right to the following.

Rule #4: Where you are right now must be a life-changing place for you tomorrow

We waste a massive amount of time every day just keeping up with what we think we should be doing. I am seriously not joking. Take today and analyse every damn second since you woke up. Be brutally honest.

How much time has been frittered away? Did you waste time gossiping? Making other’s people business the stuff of your daily tabloid? Talking about inconsequential things? Looking up funny websites? Just daydreaming (our other author has a different take on daydreaming)? If you utilised just a small portion of that time lost to being productive – instead of being busy – you would be a lot closer to your goal, wouldn’t you?

Yes, there is a damn huge difference between “productive” and being “busy”. Make sure you are one and not the other. It will change your life forever. Be like water – these four simple steps outlined here will help you move the mountains in your way. These mountains only exist in your mind. The seemingly impossible problems can effectively be faced and handled once they are broken down into individual blocks.

In the words of the immortal Bruce Lee: “Don’t get set into one form. Adapt it and build your own, and let it grow. Be like water. Empty your mind, be formless, shapeless — like water. Now you put water in a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle it becomes the bottle. You put it in a teapot it becomes the teapot. Now water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend.”

Now, go forth and rock it!
