An idea transform an abandoned quarry in Malta into a garden with indigenous Maltese plants landed James Basson a gold medal and ‘Best Show Garden’ award at this years world renown Chelsea Flower Show. Some of these plants of his choice had never been shown in the UK before. Since many were protected, the Maltese government gave James special permission to use them.

Il-Majjistral Park, together with the Radisson Blu Golden Sands Resort & Spa, are now bringing James Basson and his wife Helen for a special fundraising event in aid of the park. During the event, James Basson present award-winning design, with some specific plants unique to Malta, showing off the incredible diversity of our one-of-a-kind flora. Plants used for the design included Euphorbia melitense, Darniella melitense, Limonium melitense, Mattiola incana subsp. Melitense and more. James and Helen’s visit is sponsored by Azure, while The Radisson Blu Golden Sands Resort & Spa has offered their Ball Room Hall for free to aid the fundraiser.

Il-Majjistral Park is promoting the use of indigenous plants in our gardens, roundabouts and other spaces. It’s clear to see that when used intelligently, our plants are winning prizes abroad. This shows how much we can do with our own flora. Unfortunately, more often than not, wild plants are removed from public spaces to be replaced by alien species, which require more maintenance, more water, and cost more.

James Basson’s presentation will be held on Sunday 26th November 2017 at 17:00 in the Ball Room Hall of the Radisson Blu Golden Sands Resort & Spa. It will be followed by dinner, together with our speakers, at the ‘Flavours’ restaurant within the hotel itself, making this event an even more rewarding evening out. Participants can opt to either attend only the presentation or both presentation and dinner. The cost for attending only the presentation is €10 whilst the presentation and dinner with James costs €29 (drinks not included). This is a fundraising event, so part of the proceeds will go to help the park.
