With the weather getting warmer and our clothes getting lighter, spring is the ultimate season to get that nasty cold. There’s no denying it, we’ve all had it once or twice, and it seems to always hit us when we have so much going on in our lives. My suggestion is not to go running to the doctor at your first symptom. There are so many natural remedies that you can try and avoid medicine and antibiotics.

It’s always best to consult with your doctor if you’re having severe symptoms, but here are also a few natural remedies you could try to cure the common cold.

Stay hydrated

Drinking a lot of fluids when you’re suffering from a cold is important to clear up your congestion. And by fluids, I don’t mean alcohol! You don’t want to make yourself forget that you’re sick, but rather improve your situation so that you can get back to Saturday nights at the club. Drink a lot of water, herbal teas, and your nanna’s famous chicken brodu! One of the best remedies I’ve found is mixing up a hot drink consisting of hot water and a combination of ginger, honey and lemon. Don’t worry, if you’re not a ginger fan, the honey and lemon balance out the ginger’s strong taste.

Steam it up

Nothing’s worse than having a stuffy nose. Breathing in steam in an out of your blocked nose will help loosen up that heavy congestion. You can do this by holding your head over boiling water. Be careful not to stand too close to it. Alternatively, taking hot showers will help to relieve this congestion and loosen up your stuffed nose.


The key to recovering quickly from a cold is to stay warm and rested. Rest gives your body the needed energy to fight off any viruses or infections that are happening on the inside. Now is the time to binge-watch your favourite series without feeling too guilty. Any professional would recommend this so, doctor’s orders!

Gargle Salt Water

This is especially helpful if you have a sore throat. Gargling salt water will provide a sense of relief and moisture to your dry and scratchy throat.

Mix honey with everything

Whether it’s with your lemon and ginger or with your favourite herbal tea, honey should give you immediate relief when you’re having a sore throat or a persistent dry cough.
