It is with a heavy heart that we announce the collapse of Gozo’s Azure Window.
The natural limestone arch near Dwejra Bay in Gozo has collapsed after several warnings of its rapid depletion. Luckily, it has been captured many a time in a diversity of films, providing a spectacular backdrop to the film industry, including the Dothraki wedding in Game of Thrones.
Large pieces of rock had begun to erode from the underside of the arch, leading to warning notices being placed along the cliffs to prohibit people from walking on top of it. A large piece had in fact been dislocated in April 2012, resulting in the window to be larger and more unstable.
Prime Minister Joseph Muscat has also tweeted the sad loss of this landmark.
