Minister Helena Dalli has recently announced that a Bill is currently being drafted to legalise gay marriage in Malta.
This was stated during a conference organised by an NGO representing LGBTIQ Christians, Drachma. Mrs Dalli said that the Bill would be titled as the ‘Marriage Equality Bill’, and will be presented to Cabinet before eventually being tabled in Parliament.
If the Bill passes, not only will Malta become the twenty-third country in the world to legalise gay marriage, but also the thirteenth in Europe.
Malta is currently ranked first in the International Lesbian-Gay Association’s Rainbow Europe league for LGBTIQ rights, ahead of the United Kingdom and Belgium.
