Sparkle season is on, and it’s time to dress up, turn up the Mariah Carey playlist and get seriously festive.
Sequins have previously been reserved solely for New Year’s Eve. While the trend does indeed shine on, we’ve also been given the carte-blanche this season to wear these sparklers at any time and any place, giving onlookers a serious outfit envy.
Your New Year’s Eve celebrations can be as big or as small as you want, but even if you decide to stay home this year, there’s no need for you to mope around in your Christmas pyjamas like Bridget Jones circa 1999, so it’s time to start thinking about your party look to welcome the New Year with pizzazz!
Sequins are the ultimate party texture, and they’re essential in making a statement on the biggest night of the year, as well as during the rest of the festive period. This season, designers are sending their models down the catwalks dressed in all-out sequin garments, and they’re all surprisingly wearable. Shimmering, iridescent and very eye-catching, sequins are party-season perfection.

There’s a massive mix available, so think dazzling sequins, lashings of glitter and festive hues; from timeless bronze and gold stunners to sequin pieces in festive berry red, forest green and on-trend pink hue… We reckon this has been one of the most lucrative Christmas periods for the fashion industry in years.
All-over sequin fabric has to be worn right, or your elegant look could easily turn into an 80s nightmare. No matter what length your dress is, choose simple and classy shoes with decorations, such as teetering stilettos in black or nude.
However, some rules were made to be broken, especially when it comes to the most glittery night of the year. It’s New Year’s Eve and it’s special, so give in to the occasion; take the opportunity to wear as much glitter and sparkles as possible. Make an entrance and wow the crowd in your heavily embellished sequin party piece — the more, the merrier.

Metallics, embellishments and shimmery fabrics are made to upgrade any outfit. What are the rules for pulling off the glitz in daylight hours? Think a sprinkling of sequins or just one shiny piece; the rest of your outfit has to be monochrome. The key here is to find the right balance between disco-worthy glamorous pieces and casual everyday clothes, and masculine tailoring is the easiest way to take paillettes from party to pavement.
Choose a glitzy top or sweatshirt and pair it with jeans or a smart pencil skirt for the right dose of insouciance. Another festive fashion look is to wear a glitter-ball slip dress combined with ribbed knit. Or, take a sequin jacket or bomber and dress it up with tailored trousers and mannish boots. If one sequin piece still feels too ostentatious for your day-to-day wardrobe, think sparkling embroidery in all its glittery glory.
