On the 14th December 2016, news spread of the morning-after pill becoming available in certain pharmacies around Malta.
The motion led by lawyer and women’s rights campaigner Dr Lara Dimitrijevic has finally reached its goal, with the morning-after pill now being available and legal in Malta. Following a judicial protest filed by the Women’s Right Foundation with 102 signatures, a heated debate swept through the island, with women from all walks of life voicing their opinions on the matter.
Prominent figures that have fueled this debate include Mrs Francesca Fenech Conti, social worker and assistant lecturer Andrea Dibben, Dr Miriam Sciberras, Minister for Social Dialogue, Consumer Affairs and Civil Liberties Helena Dalli, and Government Whip Dr Godfrey Farrugia, Ms Nikita Zammit Alamango, and Medicines Authority chief Anthony Serracino Inglott who all contributed towards both sides of the argument.
EllaOne is now available at approximately 80% of pharmacies in Malta, with Levonelle following suit in the next few days.
