Whether celebrities are completely tired of conventions or it’s a Hollywood bra boycott, or maybe it’s another major 90s comeback, the braless look is definitely being reborn.
With the release of a film called Free The Nipple in 2014, the slogan quickly turned into a global campaign, which focuses on gender equality and freedom of choice. Since then, many celebrities are putting forth a lot of energy and fighting Instagram for taking down photos of them posing topless, while freeing their nipples both on social media and in public. However, like with many trending fads, it seems that this summer saw the protest turn into a fashion trend.
Ditch the Bra
In the couture world, this isn’t revolutionary. Last year, Stella McCartney, Saint Laurent, Anna Sui, Valentino and Ashish let the models down the catwalk wearing sheer tops and edgy vampy blouses.
When it comes to freeing the nipple in public, celebrities definitely understand the allure, and we’re not just talking about backless classy dresses to wear on the red carpet. This summer, celebrities like Kim Kardashian, Rihanna and Kendall Jenner decided to ditch the bra.
But even those whose names don’t share the Kardashian clan’s notoriety for the shock factor have been spotted bra-free in the daytime. Jennifer Aniston, Angelina Jolie and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley have sported jeans with t-shirts and tanks, comfy dresses and tunics.
This season, the couture world has definitely taken the braless look to the next level. And who should we blame for the trend? Anthony Vaccarello, who recently debuted as the creative director for Saint Laurent at the Paris Fashion Week. At his Spring/Summer 2017 collection, nipples popped out everywhere you looked. They were freed through sheer blouses and asymmetrical cut-outs. However, it was the glittery heart-shaped pasty that really turned heads that night.
The reaction? It seems like the fashion space just can’t get over it. This is the trend that’s being talked about, and will probably be the next celebrity fashion obsession. This week, for her 20th birthday, supermodel and social media queen Bella Hadid showed up wearing a shimmery transparent chainmail top and skirt ensemble. But what stole the fashion spotlight were silver star-shaped nipple pasties. The risky fashion choice made headlines.
The shimmer on the extreme spot is undeniably very eye-catching. But, despite how progressive we think we are, are we ready to see these risky fashion choices off the catwalk? Be ready to spot the thinly veiled trend across the fashion magazines for the next few seasons, and don’t say we didn’t warn you!
