Marie Claire Attard Bason is a talented vocalist, having acquired a taste for music at the mere age of four, seeking the guidance of several professional tutors. Recently graduated from the University of Malta, with a B.Sc. Hons in Earth Systems.
She’s always been extremely keen in partaking in extracurricular activities, such as netball and swimming. Nevertheless, music has always been a great part of her life, and this is well reflected in the amount of competitions she’s been a part of, all earning her the right doses of confidence. Marie Claire’s background in music is also rooted in her family’s blood, as her cousin is none other than Jessika, winner of the Public Vote during the 2013 Malta Eurovision Song Contest with the song Hypnotica.
Some of the major music competitions that Marie Claire’s repeatedly taken part in include the Junior Song for Europe, the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza, the Summer Hit Song Contest and L-Għanja tal-Poplu. Her most memorable experience was in 2012, when she joined Gozitan singer Francesca Borg as a backing vocalist during the performance of Take Me Far during the Malta Eurovision Song Contest.
Can you recall the first time you performed in front of a camera or an audience?
My first time in front of an audience was during my piano recital at the age of six or seven, and it was very nerve-racking. I eventually learned how to handle this sort of pressure, and at the age of ten, I had my very first experience in a singing competition. I sang Britney Spears’ Born To Make You Happy, and I felt both scared and excited and the same time.
How far would you go to protect your voice?
I’m very protective of my voice, and I make sure that I take all the necessary precautions to keep it healthy and strong.
If you had to meet an artist from the past, who would it be and what would you talk about?
I’d love to meet Aretha Franklin. We would definitely talk about soul music, about her life and her journey in becoming the queen of soul.
What makes you feel most alive?
My family, friends, and most definitely music.
