Eve.com.mt caught up with Anthea Zammit, winner of Miss World Malta 2016. Here’s what she had to share with us.
What had sparked your interest in taking part in this competition?
I’ve been following both the national and international Miss World Contests every year ever since I was a little girl, and I’ve always looked up to the girls who’ve taken part in this prestigious event, knowing that they’ve all worked so hard to help those around them during the major sector of Miss World – Beauty with a Purpose. This has been a lifelong dream of mine, and after some years of considering my entry, I’m so delighted to have been part of this year’s Maltese selection. I’m absolutely over the moon and so excited to be representing this beautiful archipelago next December in Washington DC during the Miss World Final.
How would you define the word ‘beauty’, and what does this concept mean to you?
The word ‘beauty’ does not only represent the way a person looks on the outside, but it most importantly represents the beauty of a person’s character. External beauty will fade with time, but one’s internal beauty is what will last a lifetime.
How can Miss World contribute towards society?
Miss World does not solely give importance to the physical beauty of its contestants. A major part of Miss World is dedicated to Beauty with a Purpose, where each contestant is urged to participate in a national campaign by raising funds or starting a humanitarian project to help specific areas of need within their nation. Throughout the past few weeks, I’ve been preparing and setting up a plan to be able to start Malta’s Beauty with a Purpose project. I cannot reveal too much as yet, but it’s a project which is very close to my heart and one which I cannot wait to keep on developing throughout the years to come.
How had you gone about your preparation for the contest, and how will you be upping your game for the next round?
Being a dancer by profession, I’m very well accustomed to weeks and sometimes months of preparation and rehearsals towards a specific night or performance, and I was determined to give as much time and dedication to my preparation for the Maltese selection of Miss World. I started to follow a personalised training programme, and also sought professional nutrition direction which I believe played an essential part in my journey towards the Maltese Final, and also now throughout my full preparations for Washington DC.
I’ve become very passionate about my Beauty with a Purpose project, and I’m so happy to be dedicating most of my time to a cause that is so close to my heart. I’m also really excited to be working on my piece for the talent section of Miss World, and I’m having loads of fun practicing all the different sports during my training. This has been such an emotional and amazing ride, and I simply cannot wait to experience all that is to come. I’m so grateful to have been given this opportunity and I promise to give my all to represent our beautiful islands to the very best of my abilities.
What’s been is your favourite part of the competition?
The whole competition has been an indescribable experience which has taught me so much. I’ve met so many amazing people who’ve now become such close friends. I must admit that I really enjoyed all our rehearsals for the opening number. We worked hard all together and it all truly paid off. I’m sure that all those who witnessed this magical evening will agree. I would really like to thank the organisers of Miss World Malta and all those people who’ve encouraged me to always push myself further. Also, thanks goes to all the contestants for becoming my second family and for making this journey such a memorable one.
