Born and raised in Senglea, and the eldest of three siblings, Ryan Paul Mercieca showed from a very early age that a life in the limelight was the life for him. As a child and teenager, he tried his hand at almost everything he could think of – from martial arts to football to basketball. But he could never really settle on a proper hobby until he took to the stage compering for local DJs at a festival.

The captivated audience was what got him hooked into the performing arts. He immediately enrolled into drama classes where his natural talent landed him his first few television roles in a very short period of time.

To date, Ryan’s had roles in various theatre productions, three television series and a feature film. He’s currently working on his biggest role to date in a Mark Doneo feature film which is due this December.

What support systems would you like to see for local drama?

Basically, anything that can create an equal opportunity platform for everyone. Rich or poor. Old and young. And putting culture at the centre of all academic syllabi from the earliest age possible.

What’s your normal preparation process before filming?

Unfortunately, as amateurs, there’s only so much time in the day that you can leave exclusively to role preparation. However, I normally immerse myself into music, and the genre would very much depend on the actual role. Music relaxes me and transports me. It’s the perfect aphrodisiac for artistic stimulation.

What constitutes an ideal day to you?

I love life. Deeply. The perfect day would be with family and friends, just chilling. Good food, good wine, good company.

If you could, would you change anything about yourself?

No. I may have regrets, but at least, “I did it my way”, as Mr. Sinatra would have it.

Do you have good skills in the kitchen?

No, but I’ve got a girlfriend who’s an excellent cook. Does that count?
