Averil Bonnici’s love for acting, storytelling and the arts began when she was very young. She felt like the world was a new fantastical place and became whatever she imagined it to be. Her imagination could run very wild and had no limits or boundaries, so when she realised that she could share and present what her mind has created to an audience, she became quite fond of performance.
“Unfortunately, as I grew up, academics had to become a priority, as those around me managed to convince me that I must pursue a ‘proper’ profession, so I ended up not taking part in extracurricular activities anymore, even though I really wanted to. As I was about to enter university, I decided that it was time for me to study what I truly loved, so I chose Theatre Studies and Communications. I started experimenting with physical theatre at university, I was absolutely hooked, and I knew that this is where my heart belonged.”
She’s taken part in a few theatrical performances, namely Wrecked Dolls, L-Imħalla, Boulevard and Bejn Tliet Ħitan. Her love for acting on screen also grew and this led her to TV shows such as X’inhu Ġej?, Iċ-Ċaqqufa and Intriċċi.
Averil discovered that what really matters to her when it comes to the arts is not the quantity of projects she’s part of, but the quality, and making sure that she truly gives her all in the projects she contributes towards.
If any of my readers wanted to break into acting, what would you recommend they’d start with?
I’d say start with yourself. Know yourself and who you really are and what you really want to do. When it comes to acting and producing work that makes you feel great, there’s really no short way out and there are no instant results. Study and learn what acting’s really about, find out as much as possible about the greatest theatre practitioners, and develop your own ways to embody the characters in your imagination from what you learn. If there’s passion in your work, it’ll shine through.
If you could work with any other person in your field, who would it be?
I’d say Leonardo DiCaprio because I truly admire all the work he’s done and the passion he has for acting. He truly gives his all and it does indeed show in his work. I can only aspire to work with him someday and hope to experience and learn from what he does first hand.
Where do you hope to be five years from now?
I’ve been one to make plans all my life, and I’ve learned that planning long term never really works out the way you intend it to, so I like to keep an open mind. That being said, it’s a great hope of mine to pursue a career overseas, and I also hope that in some way, shape, or form I’d have a better platform to encourage people to take care of their health and the world we live in.
Is there anything on your bucket list that’s yet to be accomplished?
I’m afraid my bucket list is quite a long one, and I do work on it actively. But to name a few objectives, I’d like to produce and star in a big budget production as well as direct one some day. I’d also like to travel the world and see what it has to offer, and experience as many natural phenomenons as I possibly can. I’m incredibly fond of this planet and when I immerse myself in nature, it’s always like a revelation.
What fashion item can you not live without?
Definitely make up. I genuinely think I cannot live without it. I know I may be cheating by not choosing one item, but I like to think of it as a whole package. Besides, I get to paint something different on my own face everyday.
Do you ever worry about getting old?
Yes, I do. And quite often. Not about my appearance or things of the sort, but I mostly worry about losing the people I love and not achieving all the things I’d like to accomplish. So I try to let those around me know how much I love them, and I try and make it a point to do something every day, no matter how small it is, that contributes towards achieving my goals in life.
