Three new highlights for the Malta International Arts Festival have been proudly announced by Arts Council Malta.
BalletBoyz is the brainchild of Michael Nunn and Billy Trevitt, who founded the company in 2001. They danced all over the world for a decade and won numerous awards and accolades working with leading dancers, choreographers and designers. In 2010, they retired from the stage and launched the first edition of their ground breaking project, The Talent. Michael and Billy selected eight young male dancers from a variety of backgrounds, and mentored and coached them to create a company of first-class performers. The company has now expanded to ten dancers, and regularly tours internationally.
BalletBoyz will be performing at Pjazza Teatru Rjal on the 15th and 16th July at 9pm.
On the 9th July at 9pm, the Royal Northern College of Music’s Big Band, directed by Mike Hall, will be entertaining audiences at Fort St Elmo. They will be playing Darryl Brenzel’s arrangement of Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring, bringing out the freedom, crude rhythmic, irregular pulse, and the primeval nature of this great rite to the fore.
The third performance will take place at Fort St Elmo on the 11th July at 9pm, when Simon Schembri and Gilberto Pereyra will perform works for classical guitar and bandoneon. Simon Schembri completed his studies with Alexandre Lagoya in Paris, where he won first prize unanimously at the Conservatoire Supérieur de Musique of Paris. He is often invited to major international festivals, performing alongside renowned musicians.

Schembri will be playing works from The Spanish Suite by Isaac Albeniz. For the second part of the concert, Schembri will be joined by Gilberto Pereyra, who will be playing the bandoneon – the historical instrument of Argentinian tango. Pereyra has performed in the greatest tango halls in Buenos Aires, together with the most prestigious Argentinian musicians. He has collaborated with soloists from the Royal Opera House and participates in numerous festivals alongside other well-known artists.
More events for the MIAF, held between the 8th and 18th July in various locations, will be announced next week. Further details can be obtained from the Malta Arts Festival website. Early bird tickets will be available from the 4th May up to the 7th June, and regular tickets will be available thereafter.
