Alex Thomson has been in the local and international scene for more than 8 years. Having played throughout Europe, he currently resides in Malta where he organises a myriad of events, ranging from festivals to weekly nights.

Alex is known for his underground house sound, but he’s recently been showcasing his ability to play break beats and drum ‘n’ bass. His sets are as driving as his personality, which is full of energy and surprises. He has ticked more musical boxes than many of his peers.

A musical education – Tick. A history of releases – Tick. Runs a school dedicated to sharing the knowledge – Tick. Regular gigs throughout Northern Europe – Tick. He’s like the second hand of a clock.

For one so young, his vision is clear. Full of keen momentum, he’s bringing innovation to the dance music community whilst also passing on his knowledge. A person who does not take himself too seriously yet always delivers the goods, both in the studio and behind the decks, Alex can be summed up as a quirky breath of fresh air, something the dance music community is currently embracing with much enthusiasm.

Tell us about your journey in becoming a DJ.

I started listening to house music when I was 12 years old, and it just seemed to help me in a number of ways. It would relax me, help me concentrate and make me happy. After a few years of listening to incredible sets by people like DJ Hell, Sven Vath, Anthony Rother and Vitalic, I found myself needing to know how they did it, how they could play song after song telling a story so perfectly.

That curiosity is what sparked it all off. I attempted to do it on my computer at home and failed miserably. I then went to lessons and learnt to play on Vinyl, and at the age of 16, I was picked up by Pioneer and given a sponsorship, so I moved to CDJs. From there on end, it just grew with me as a part of who I am.

I owe a lot of it to my mum, Sheila Thomson. Legally, my name is Alex Mizzi, but I chose to use her maiden name as my stage name as she always encouraged me to do what I love. I never expected anything to come of it. I just figured I would unravel the mystery of what my musical idols were doing behind the decks, and if I ever did get a gig or two, then having Thomson in my name would be my way of saying thank you to my mum for all the support… and the lifts to and from the lessons.

What’s your favourite tune of all time?

The Imperial March by John Williams.

When all the partying is over how do you like to chill out?

When it appears that all the partying is over, that is actually when we organisers and DJs get to start partying. If an event finishes at about 4am, I generally don’t touch my first drink till about 2am, when I know the event is running smoothly. Then I can finally relax, but it ends super quickly and then you’ve got to close the event off. So a good after-party is what I really enjoy. When that’s over, I’ll get some sleep and look forward to a lazy day on the couch.

Aside from music, what other things do you cherish in life?

My amazingly supportive girlfriend, my family, scuba diving and my couch.

What’s the best thing about being a DJ?

Meeting new people! Happy, friendly, smiley people everywhere you go!

What sound or noise do you like?

When you squash two walnuts against each other and instead of cracking they sort of slide against each other and make this weird noise. I like it.

Given the chance, would you drink wine, beer or vodka?

Wine with a meal, beer with a friend, and I’ll have a Jack Daniels & Ginger Ale over vodka, please.
