Chris Micallef has been involved in drama from the age of 7. Throughout the years, he has been taking part in various theatre productions, plays and musicals which have made him more confident and mature as a person, as he used to be very shy. Last year, he was cast to be an actor in Becky The Return. This was his first television experience, so it was a challenge for him to distinguish between being an actor on stage and on television, as both are two different mediums. Due to its success, they are now currently filming the second season which has just started this October.
“Apart from drama, I also produce two television shows – Wedding Plan, which is now airing every Tuesday at 9.35pm on NET, and World Next Top Model, which will return for its third year on NET every Tuesday from January,” states Chris in this interview.
Can you describe the local drama scene in your own words?
Although acting is my part time job, with regards to television series, I personally think that budgets for production are very low, so the quality is what it is, compared to other international series. A problem which we are also facing is the increased number of series with familiar TV people suddenly becoming ‘actors’, yet have never been involved in drama or have never attended theatre courses. The Maltese theatre scene is different – a lot of drama groups are very professional and ensure that they give their audiences the best plays, musicals etc.
How would you describe your relationship with money?
Money is of course very useful if you want to lead a comfortable life, but unfortunately it doesn’t lead to happiness. My motto is ‘live life to the full right now’, so I don’t bother in trying to maximise my earnings as long as I’m happy.
Speaking about money, what’s a hobby you spend most of your money on?
Travelling. I spend all my wages travelling the world around 5 to 10 times a year!
What challenges have you had to face in your chosen career?
With my nutrition career, I meet loads of new people every day. This means I meet a lot of people with different illnesses and diseases, including cancer, and at the end of the day, I realise how precious life is and how often it is that we don’t get to make the most of it while we can.
In your opinion, what’s the best thing in life?
Love. Without love you are never fulfilled.
What was your biggest failure to date?
I don’t think I’ve ever experienced any failures in my life. What I try to do is learn from some mistakes that I’ve been through, so that I’ll be fully prepared for what life will offer.
