Jon Laferla comes from a family which has always been involved in drama. In fact, his parents had founded a drama group in their home town of B’Kara in the early eighties, and at 6 or 7 years of age, Jon was already on stage. In 1998, Jon and his wife started part-time work as TV crew with TV station Education 22, which was at that time entirely manned by teachers.
“We had just graduated as teachers and the following year, Charles Xuereb, who was then Head of the station, asked us to do a slot on religion, our area of study, in a children’s programme. At first I was reluctant to do it as I didn’t like being in front of the camera, but eventually I settled in, and we regularly continued doing children’s programmes. We then roped in my younger brother Josef to do short filmed slots together with producer Carmel Serracino. They had proved to be very popular. From then on, I took part in a variety of TV series practically every season, the most recent being Iċ-Ċaqqufa and Libra from this October,” states Jon in this interview.
Do you have any behind-the-scenes anecdotes you could share?
Once, while filming It-Tfal Jiġu bil-Vapuri inside Palazzo Vilhena in Mdina, I asked my wife to come to Mdina with the kids and meet me there, as it was a beautiful day. It’s important to remember that I was playing the role of a priest, wearing a cassock. When we had a short break from filming I texted her to come and meet me outside and she instinctively kissed me. At first we didn’t realise why everybody had stopped staring, but then I looked at myself and what I was wearing and understood the reason for the wide-eyed reactions!
What do you cherish in life?
I will borrow my favourite band’s motto for this – Love, Peace and Rock’n’Roll. It’s the love of my family and friends, the peace within which I strive for, and the rock’n’roll I listen to… and that’s been the Scorpions ever since I was 12!
What role does technology play in your life?
Not much. It’s just the basics – mobile and internet – which are obviously incredibly useful inventions, but I’m not into falling in love with the latest gadgets.
What percentage of your life do you spend shopping?
With regards to clothes, my manager does that for me… My wife, that is. She knows what I like and she loves shopping so I let her do the magic! Otherwise, I mainly shop online for books or Scorpions-related items.
What makes you angry?
The ever increasing wealth gap in the world, which inevitably leads to violence and wars.
If you could meet anyone in the world, dead or alive, who would it be and what would you say to them?
Jesus Christ. I have a lot to say to him, but it would be wiser to listen!
