ELEKTRA ANASTASI is an Italian-Maltese actress. Her love for the arts began at a very young age when she fell in love with dance. She studied classical ballet Cecchetti method for eight years at the Tanya Bayona Princess Poutiatine Ballet Academy and was trained in theatre at the Masquerade Theatre Arts School.
Theatre has always been a part of her life – she took part in several local theatre productions, some of which are Festen, Blackbird, Secret Bridesmaids Business, Medea and 4:48 Psychosis.
“I had a wonderful experience attending a Shakespeare Master Class with Patsy Rodenburg and a Shakespeare training programme at RADA (Royal Academy Of Dramatic Arts, London) which taught me a lot about discipline within this field. I fell in love with film a little later on in my life after being given a role in The Devil’s Double, which was directed by Lee Tamahori and featured Dominic Cooper – both were truly lovely to work with. I then worked with Canadian Director Arev Manoukian (La Nuit Blanche) on a short film called The Maltese Fighter which was a collaboration between Maltafilm together with Spy Films Canada. I also worked in several other short films and commercials,” explained Elektra.
Last year, Elektra was glad to organise the first Nancy Bishop (Nancy Bishop Casting) Master Class workshop in Malta to train Maltese actors on how to market themselves for international work through the Bishop technique. “I am excited to see what this year has in store for me, as I have some interesting projects in the pipeline.”
Can you describe your state of mind while acting?
For me, acting is an equally terrifying but freeing experience. I live for the natural adrenaline rush it gives you before and after a performance. I like to discover new identities and explore different minds when playing diverse roles. When I perform, my mind is blank and only focused on the person I am portraying. In my everyday life, I tend to over think and my mind has no off-button! Acting provides me with a mental break from my complicated thought patterns. It is a place in my head that I go to which I can’t really explain – it just exists and I feel content when I’m in it.
Is fashion an important part of your life?
Anyone who knows me will tell you that I adore fashion. I used to own a fashion store a few years ago, it was torture to maintain self-control every time the new stock arrived. I was like a kid in a candy store! Fashion definitely plays an important role in my life because I strongly believe in the importance of how one presents themselves, and I feel that fashion helps a person express their individuality.
Do you prefer dining out or clubbing? And why?
I think I am well past my hardcore clubbing days. It was fun while it lasted, but I think everything has a time and place. Now, I much prefer dining out with good friends or having a cosy evening with my partner, but I don’t think I would refuse a good old dance off with a close friend!
So far, what’s the most money you have spent in one go?
That would definitely have to be my trip to Los Angeles last year!
