On the 13th January in Malta, a RUSSIAN MASQUERADE BALL dedicated to the celebration of the Old New Year in Russia was organised by the RUSSIAN – MALTESE CIRCLE ORGANISATION.
Celebrating the OLD NEW YEAR is a very old Russian tradition which reflects the past when the actual New Year was celebrated on the 13th of January. This was due to the old calendar Russia which was used until 1700 when Peter the First changed it to 1st January. However, Russian people, just like the Maltese like to celebrate and that is why the New Year in Russia is celebrated twice!
A Masquerade Ball and a gala dinner was organised. All the guests were taken to the Dolmen Hotel by limousine. Together with the numerous Russians who live in Malta, a number of famous Maltese celebrities such as John Bundy, Marica Mizzi, Chrysander Agius and Daniel Chircop etc. also joined.
Among the guests there were also the winners of the beauty pageant QUEEN OF THE PLANET 2014 (Lana Xuereb, Allison Wood and Marygrace Micallef) which is organised by WOMEN’S PLANET Foundation. There were also other guests of honour.
The organisers of the Masquerade Ball prepared an impressive programme for all the guests starting with a live band by George Curmi and Yuriy Sharigin, followed by a dazzling cabaret show from Moscow. There was also a fashion shows by Nilara (Malta), Castor Fur Company (Greece) and lingerie by BACI! At the end of the show, the presenters also announced a charity auction which was held in aide of the Community Chest Fund.
The idea of having such an event in Malta came from the intention to help Russians keep up with their traditions while living abroad. It also served to introduce Russian culture to the Maltese audience, thus strengthening relationships between the two countries and help Russian residents integrate in Maltese society.
