One thing I would love to become better at is complimenting people. Why do I find it so difficult to walk up to someone, be it a total stranger at the supermarket, someone at work or even a friend or family member?
It often happens that I notice something that really attracts me, maybe a nice top, a salesgirl’s nails, or the way a person has done her hair. It could also be a random act of kindness which is taking place right next to me. Somehow, for some reason, my mouth remains shut and I can’t get myself to say it out loud.
I won’t say it never happens though, of course I do say nice things to people, but being spontaneous in this matter is apparently easier said than done and it’s mainly when it comes to strangers that I would love to let go of this kind of shyness.
Imagine you’re out and about and someone randomly stops you to compliment your shoes or your looks – wouldn’t that make you happy? Wouldn’t it be nice if people did it more often? Obviously, the compliment must be genuine, something you react to and just say because you feel it in that very moment, not something which might make the other person think you’re after something.
While on the subject, people – myself included- should also work on the way they ‘accept’ a compliment. If a person responds negatively, maybe by being sarcastic, feeling embarrassed or giving a random compliment in return, the compliments will eventually stop because no-one wants to feel that they have done something wrong by noticing someone’s beauty or accomplishment. Some people actually insist that the person giving a compliment doesn’t mean it at all.
There are some ways to respond to a compliment which make you sound quite confident without sounding as if you get them all the time.
“Thanks, I appreciate that.” “Thank you, that’s a really lovely thing to say.” ”Thanks, you’re a kind person.” These are just some examples – something to think about!
At the end of the day, you would have done something nice regardless if the person you complimented appreciated it or not and that’s always worth something.
Have a nice day, everyone and maybe tell someone something pleasant today :)
