London Fashion Week 2014 – The Designer Xiao Li

Xiao Li is a designer with a huge amount of talent. She was born in China but studied in London at the London College of Fashion and the Royal College of Art. She has already won a number of awards, including the much coveted Merit Award from Fashion Scout in 2014.

Her Spring/Summer 2015 collection is breathtaking – beautiful, clean, minimalist and it speaks volumes about tailoring and clean fashion design. Following the recent trends for oversized clothing, Xiao Li’s designs are somewhat boxy with padded shoulders and details that you imagine could almost stand alone. There’s an element of sport and comfort prevalent throughout this collection, which makes it even more exciting and more desirable.

I had the opportunity to visit Xiao Li backstage and to watch the hair team work their magic. The wonderful Effie Davies led the TONI & GUY LABELM team through the task of completing the model’s hair which matched the look of the collection perfectly. The show was running late, about twenty minutes late in fact, whilst an element of tardiness is to be expected at all fashion shows, this pushed it a bit further than usual. The interesting thing about being backstage is that you see how things work. I expected lots of panic, lots of rushing around, but there was actually none of that and everybody continued to work professionally and carefully.

Time for the catwalk show. I got to sit in the front row which was great. Although I had just held the clothes in my hands a few minutes previously, it’s always different watching how the designer has decided to present them and to see the final look. The clothes were fantastic – they looked both extraordinary and normal at the same time – I just wanted to rush up to the catwalk, strip some of the garments off the models and wear them myself.
