A teenage volleyball player from Kazakhstan, Sabina Altynbekova, has become an internet sensation for something that has nothing to do with the game. According to critics, Altynbekova is so beautiful that she is a distraction to the sport.
The history of women, whether it be in sport, or in any other position that showcases ability, has long been tainted with ridicule, hurdles and harassment, but we should be well past that age.
Women have been proven to possess skills to compete and be valued for their success. However, when it comes to women, the first comment that usually comes up is related to physical appearance rather than to their ability. This acts as an insult rather than a compliment.
How one looks should not be the crucial factor when it comes to measuring ability. Hiring a woman because she is beautiful or not hiring her because she is not beautiful enough is simply not an acceptable reason.
Discrimination is not acceptable at any time and we should strive for girls and women to give their best and be rewarded according to their abilities, not their level of beauty. Women have waited long enough, it is time to break the cycle.
