Some time ago, when I was first introduced to BB creams, I must admit that I was a bit sceptical … I could not believe that it would actually work as promised. But once I had tried it out, I was hooked. Providing a sheer coverage and an instantaneous glow, BB creams are the way to go, especially in the hot, summer months when normal foundation proves to be too heavy and suffocating for our faces.
But first things first. What does the term ‘BB’ stand for? It stands for “Beauty Balm” and this, in a nutshell, explains what this cream actually does. It offers daily sun protection, extra hydration and a touch more coverage than a tinted moisturiser.
Also, BB creams generally contain zinc oxide or titanium oxide, which are physical sunblocks that have some built-in water-resistant properties. All this makes BB creams perfect for the hot summer months.
Furthermore, with regards to skin treatment, there are BB creams that contain:
- Anti-aging components, including peptides and antioxidants, such as vitamins A, E, and C.
- Moisturising workhorses, such as hyaluronic acid and glycerine.
- Ingredients, such as licorice and arbutin, that help even out skin tone.
- Light-reflecting mica to gives skin a luminous finish.
- Silicone-based ingredients, such as dimethicone, that help smooth the skin and act like a primer does.
However, all that glitters is not gold, and BB creams do have some limitations. For example – BB creams do not come in a wide range of colours as do foundations so finding a BB cream that matches exactly the colour of your skin can be a challenge. Another limitation is that you won’t find a BB cream — or, for that matter, a tinted sunscreen — that has acne-fighting ingredients. That is why the best candidates for BB creams are people with normal to oily skin and light to medium skin tone, and who don’t need heavy moisturisers or anti-acne products.
Despite all this, I am still personally very much a devotee of BB creams, as I feel that even by using only a pea-sized dab of the product I can achieve fuller coverage without having to move up to a heavier foundation that feels like a mask. It also takes care of your skin and gives you a very polished yet natural finish in the process.
