The Maltese Islands are well known for their stunning scenery and are often used as the location for films and TV shows. It has recently been announced that By The Sea starring Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt is to be filmed in Mgarr ix-Xini, Gozo.
The couple are certainly no strangers to visiting the Maltese Islands, having been here quite a few times already.
Here’s a look at the various movies that Brad Pitt has been involved in and which brought him to Malta.
Troy: In 2004, Brad Pitt starred as Achilles in the 2004 blockbuster Troy, which was mostly filmed in Malta. Various locations were used for the film, with the streets and grand square of Troy being built within the vicinity of Fort Ricasoli, which is near the Three Cities and overlooking the Grand Harbour. Ghajn Tuffieha Bay was the setting for the scene where Achilles and the Greeks reach the Trojan shore and the ‘ruins’ of a temple were built at Mellieha.
World War Z: This 2013 disaster horror movie was filmed in locations all around Europe, a notable one of which was Malta. One of the central scenes in the movie, set in ‘Jerusalem’ was actually set around Valletta and the airport scene was filmed in the Malta International Airport. Many different areas of Valetta were used as locations in the movie. Fort St Elmo, Wine Wharf and the Triton Fountain were all featured in various scenes.
It has been reported that the new Pitt-Jolie movie could leave around 20 million euros for the Gozo economy. If this turns out to be so, we hope that the couple will be persuaded to come back a few more times over the next years!
