Whenever I meet someone, they always ask me, “Where do I start when applying makeup?” and I always reply, “You start with your skincare routine!”
Your skin is going to be your canvas, so a good skin helps the final result of your makeup. Most of us are not blessed with a perfect skin and even if we have good skin, there will be times during the year when our skin will be affected due to stress, sickness, diet or external factors. These forces affect our skin by showing signs of flakiness, excessive oiliness, dark circles under the eyes, dehydration, etc.
As a daily skincare routine, we should always have at least four basic products. Of course, when it comes to treating skin problems, there are loads of other products, but the basic four are a cleanser, a toner, an eye cream or eye gel and a moisturiser. These should be used twice a day, morning and evening. This is important. It is useless to buy products and then forget to use them on a daily basis. It is no use to then pack on a large amount on your face once a week, products simply do not work like that. Each day, use a small amount and you will see an improvement in your skin after four weeks.
The Cleanser: This removes makeup, plus skin grime such as excessive oil, dead skin cells and pollution from the atmosphere. It is important to cleanse well even if you do not apply any makeup.
The Toner: This has a PH balance of 5.5 as does our skin. It removes any traces of cleanser. When we use water to rinse our cleanser, water has chemicals and is harsh to our skin, therefore the toner restores our PH balance.
Eye cream or gel: The skin around the eye area is ten times thinner than the skin of the face, so we need appropriate products which are lighter in texture for our eyes.
Moisturiser: A moisturiser will balance our skin. Therefore, one for oily skin will control excessive oil while one for dry skin will give it the nutrients it needs.
