Kicking off today, June 12, this World Cup, which is the 20th of its kind, will be hosted in Brazil for the second time since 1950. The international men’s football tournament will host a total of 64 matches in twelve cities across Brazil, with the participation of 32 teams.
Spain is the defending country. It achieved its first World title after and having won against the Netherlands in 2010 when the World Cup was hosted in South Africa. This year, for the first time in World Cup Finals, goal-line technology will be used, which is a method used to determine when the ball has completely crossed the goal line, through the use of electronic devices.
Adidas started to make soccer balls in 1963. It was in 1970 when it made its first official FIFA World Cup Ball. This World Cup official match ball is the colourful Adidas Brazuca, which was named so by a public poll.
England and Italy will be playing against each other during the 8th Match of this World Cup, on June 14.
To quote from FIFA’s official website, “To date, six out of the 19 editions of the FIFA World Cup have been won by the host team.” Does Brazil stand a chance? We’ll have to simply wait and see!
The 2014 FIFA World Cup will officially end on July 13. The next World Cup will be held in Russia in 2018.
