Carlo Gerada was known in school as the quiet boy of few words. That is until he started expressing himself through music. He was first introduced to electronic music at the age of 16, when he stumbled upon a programme called FL Studio, which his brother had downloaded on his computer.
Carlo explained, “It was love at first sight and I have never looked back! This love slowly evolved into a home studio in my parent’s spare bedroom, in which I recorded my first demos. I slowly made my way into local radio stations with my first vocal track, Just Fun featuring the vocals of international singer De Lacy from the hit single Hideaway. I continued producing electronic dance tracks, such as Can’t Stop and Never Meant which featured local talent Chess. I then hit Number One on Malta’s charts with My World which featured Jan Cortez. This also won Best Song Award at the Bay Music Awards in 2012”, said Carlo Gerada in his introduction to this interview with Ramona Portelli.
Making a career out of this ‘hobby’ was always his dream. He has since been deejaying in top local clubs and also every Sunday in one of Paceville’s top clubs, So City, as The Rockstars. “It’s been quite a tough ride, but it’s all worth it in the end!”, he admitted.
How did you first discover music in your life?
I have always had a passion for music and have always tried to sing. I also used to record tapes so that I would have music to dance to or to play in my father’s car. I guess you could say that it’s been since I was very young..
How long have you been actively involved into music?
I have been producing music for around eight years now, since I was sixteen.
Can you describe your state of mind while producing music?
Whenever I step into my studio I simply leave everything behind me and let my mind do the work. It takes time until I’m totally in the zone, but then It’s like everything comes naturally to me. I hear the music in my mind and quickly transfer it to my keyboard.
How would you describe your relationship with money?
I feel that even though my line of work would somewhat give the impression of being a happy-go-lucky guy, I’m quite the contrary. I’d say it’s pretty good and fair, I do go out, have fun and also treat myself now and then, but I also try to budget my earnings.
What are your comments about our local music scene/clubbing?
Our clubbing scene has come a long way and looks like it’s improving every year, with big names coming to our island and parties being held all year round, it surely is the place to be for every electronic dance music (EDM) lover out there. In my opinion, we have one of the best crowds in the world and Malta is doing one hell of a good job to provide a great clubbing experience.
What would you never, ever buy – and why not?
It has to be flavoured water. I find it to be the most pointless thing on this planet.
