Sometimes I marvel at how fast the world I live in continues to change day after day and nowhere is this more evident than in the world of marketing and social media. It seems that every week there is a new tool that, suddenly, everyone is using, and while Facebook continues to be an effective tool at reaching an audience, gone are the days when it reigned alone.
As a fashion journalist and stylist, new tools and technologies have a greater impact on my work than that of an average person. I’m guessing many business people feel the same way, so maybe I’m just being nostalgic, but sometimes I get a hankering for the past, for the days when rules applied.
When I look back at the world as I knew it ten years ago, when being a good university student was a guarantee of job and life security, I realise how everything has changed. The same standardizations no longer apply today, education guarantees nothing. A simple bright idea like applying basic processing to images can catapult a person to financial stardom and having a quirky personality can make you one of the most famous people in the world.
So where’s the rule book, where’s the mapped out path our children will ask? And that’s it – there isn’t one. The rules have flown out of the window, it’s time to think up new ideas, new thoughts; it’s time to be creative, versatile, adaptable and it’s time we figured out how to explain this to the new generation.
