Interview with Eleanor Cassar

Name: Eleanor Cassar

Star Sign: Libra

Marital Status: Married

Eleanor Cassar not only is my friend, but a versatile singer that can imitate to perfection Whitney Houston, Celine Dion, Adele, Kate Perry, Mariah Carey without batting an eyelid! Key notes are a piece of cake for her and high notes are a walk in the park

When did you start singing?

I was 11 years of age. My teacher encouraged me to participate in theatre events and musicals. The passion for music continued which led me to join Skene in Luqa, where I had many opportunities to perform solo, in main roles and a capella during several acts throughout the years. I am now the lead singer of a five-piece band, Zone 5, playing Jazz, Soul, Pop and Rock. My favourite songs always remain ballads though.

Who are the singers that inspire you in your life and why?

Whitney Houston mostly, Celine Dion and Mariah Carey for their versatility in the voicing capabilities and for their huge worldwide success.

What was your biggest achievement until now in the singing arena?

Together with my band we organized a concert a year ago after Whitney Houston’s death. It was called ‘Queen of the Night – A Tribute to Whitney Houston’ – I sang 18 songs, live, for a packed audience in City Hall Theatre, Valletta, and received three standing ovations. It was a big moment for me, an unforgettable time. It meant appreciation for being there singing for them. I wish I can relive it again.

I know you had the opportunity to travel quite a lot and participate in international song festivals as a competitor. Where did you perform abroad and what did you win?

Discovery Song Festival 2001 in Bulgaria – first place, Golden Stag Festival – first place amongst 27 countries in Romania in 2004. Astana Festival, Khazakstan 2007- 1st place, Gold Award i.e. second place at the Universong Festival in the Canary Islands, Shanghai Music Festival 2006 – 3rd place, can’t complain really!

You’ve also won a number of festivals here in Malta, which were they?

At Ghanja tal Poplu, duet with Glenn Vella, it-Tfal tal-Llum – first place and Naf li Inti Thobbni FIDOF AWARD for Promising Artists; another duet with Glen Vella, at Kanzunetta Independenza M’Hawnx Bhalek – 2nd place; Super One Festival – another duet with Glen Vella – First Place and FIDOF Award for Best Interpretation. Xemx mil Gdid – first place at Kanzunetta Indipendenza in 2006; and Bniedem Iehor first place at the Malta International TV Song Festival.

I know that the best is yet to come. What are your future plans?

We are hopefully planning another concert that’s bigger and better! It’s still in the stage of initial discussions and brainstorming of ideas, but I know it will materialise. In the meantime we do singing in hotels, weddings, and special appearances in festivals which I love to do. After all these years of singing I still get butterflies in my stomach backstage before I go out. I just started the new schedule of ‘Hadd Ghalik‘ however I take no breaks as summer is full of activities throughout the island. I have also been invited to tour Australia next year for a set of concerts and I am working on a new single for the Malta Song for Europe.
