Tropical Diseases: END7

There are so many deserving charities and causes it can be overwhelming knowing which to support or donate to. Wherever your heart lies is usually the best place to start when it comes to parting with your hard earned cash. All contributions, whatever the recipient cause, will be gratefully received.

However, recently a charity caught my eye that I simply had to write about.

END7. Have you heard of it? This fantastic foundation is a charity with a difference. It has a clear aim. A clear deadline. And a clear strategy. END7 has declared that they will eliminate seven deadly and neglected tropical diseases by the year 2020.

1. Ascariasis (roundworm)
2.  Trichuriasis (whipworm)
3.  Hookworm
4.  Schistosomiasis (snail fever)
5. Lymphatic Filariasis (elephantiasis)
6.  Trachoma (blinding trachoma)
7.  Onchocerciasis (river blindness)

For hundreds of millions this provides a light at the end of a dark tunnel, and gives them hope that there will be an end to suffering and pain. Over half a billion children around the globe are living with parasitic and bacterial diseases living and breeding in their bodies.

These horrific conditions will stop children from attending school and adults from going to work in order to feed their families, and often, without treatment they can lead to lifelong disabilities.

The solution is simple yet effective – to ask for a mere 50 cents, that buys a packet of pills, which is enough to protect and save one child’s life.

It’s great to see a charity with the determination and conviction to set themselves a deadline for such a mammoth task.

Their slogan: Together we can see the end. Support END7.

I know I will be.
