A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of modelling/working with locally based fashion designer, Andi Wang, who is definitely someone to count on for future styles and designs.
After spending five minutes with Andi you’ll know that a very ambitious, hard working and passionate person stands behind all those beautiful creations that I had the pleasure of trying out, along with three other girls, for the photoshoot which took place at Palazzo De Piro in Mdina.
I also managed to ask Andi a few questions so that you can get to know him better.
Tell us about your background…
I am a Russian-Chinese multiracial, born in China. I started travelling with my parents at the early age of five where I became acquainted with various cultures. My family then moved to Malta when I was 14 and this is when I began to show promising talent in fine art. Three years later I travelled to Scotland, Greece and The Netherlands to further my studies in Art and Design and in which time I was able to further develop my skills. A couple of years later, I opened my solo contemporary Art Exhibition in Valletta.
From where do you get your inspiration?
My inspiration comes a lot from the history of Art and Culture, from the places that I travel to. I love the richness of the history but at the same time the simplicity of the modern contemporary way of today’s living. When it comes to style, people who inspire me most are the fashion icons of the 1960s, Catherine Deneuve, Brigitte Bardot, Audrey Hepburn, just to name a few.
On a rainy day, what motivates you and what keeps you going?
Music, chocolate and a dose of Positive Thinking I would say… I am a very optimistic person in general, of course like everyone else, I also have my ups and downs, but when i am
in that dark place, I just put on my favourite records and dive into another world and I always keep myself busy to distract me from the negative thoughts. P.S. if none of these works,
I just go shopping, that always helps a little more.
When it comes to your designs and collections, what is your dream and ambition?
I want to reach out to people and give them this little bit of confidence and luxury through the way they dress. I think that’s what I want to achieve with my designs. I think that there is enough clothing in this world, so I just want to create something special and one of a kind. That’s why all my designs are custom made.
Malta is a small island, do you feel there is space to grow and develop your work?
Malta is rather small, but it’s the place that I grew up in, it’s a part of me, it’s my home. I remember saying this when I was 18, that I wanted to make a change in this place, maybe I wasn’t quite sure what it was, but now it’s very clear, I want to change the way people dress. I think until I reach my goal locally, I wouldn’t expand elsewhere, not as yet.
The Maltese fashion scene is still evolving and still trying to catch up with the rest of the fashion Capitals, but we are getting there, we need more talented people who are not afraid to speak their mind.
Describe the Resort Collection, what is the main thought behind it?
This Resort Collection is actually a summary of what an ”ANDI WANG” woman is all about. She is this feminine, confident woman always looking chic, whatever the occasion. She is relaxed but with a touch of glamour and she is classic but at the same time very modern. I think that’s why there is something for everyone in this collection.
Who is your dream client? Who do you want wearing your design on the red carpet?
I think for every designer, having their creations on celebrities and be seen on the red carpet is the ultimate goal. I am no different. However, I want to focus on real ordinary people, fashion should be everywhere, fashion should be accessible to everyone, so can I just say my dream clients are each and every woman on this planet? I would feel really happy seeing everyday people wearing my clothes.
