Priscilla Psaila aka KAYA studied classical voice, theory and piano at the Victoria, Royal and Trinity Schools of Music in London.  In 2000, with ‘Our Love’, she won third place in the Malta Song for Europe. Afterwards she went on to perform across Europe in countries such as Lithuania, Romania, Italy, Poland, Germany, and Spain among others.

A few years ago, Kaya founded a singing school with a current enrolment of 87 students. On television, she appeared on a popular musical programme for 2 years and served as producer for Kidz TV, featuring her students.

In 2011, she was selected by top Hollywood film composer William Camilleri (Braveheart, Silence of the Lambs, etc.) to perform on his latest album Timeless.

From where did your stage name ‘Kaya’ come from?

Way back in 2011, I was invited to perform at the Couture Fashion Week in New York. This opportunity literally came just at the same time that I was disappointed that I did not make it to the finals of the Malta Song for Europe. Incidentally I met William Camilleri, son of Charles Camilleri, a very well known Maltese composer in the international fora, who offered me ‘Timeless’, a fantastic song written by himself. It was here where Kaya cropped up. My team advised me to have a stage name for my participation in New York, and Kaya was the best choice we could have ever made.

Were you ever bullied as a child?

No, but I sympathise with all those who have been through this situation and encourage them to speak up.  I know they pass through hell and that is why we need more awareness about children being bullied at schools. However I think that authorities should take bold measures not only to help victims, but also perpetrators, sometimes victims themselves of horrible abuses.

Do you look forward for the annual sales?

I do because sometimes you can buy good items at very good discounted prices. However that depends on whether or not I would have spent everything during the festive season.

What’s the most romantic thing a guy has ever done for you so far?

Left his country and everything behind him to start a new life with me here in Malta!

How would you describe your relationship with money?

There’s no doubt that money is an important component of happiness, but health and positivity should always come first and foremost.
