During our trip to London for the Top Model World Wide Search international Grand Final, we chose Sophie Fraser-Smith from Bermuda to be photographed with Maria Bezzina’s Jewellery after Maria Bezzina won the Best Designer Award during the selections of the Top Model Malta 2013 last February. It was a genuine pleasure not only to meet Sophie, but also her wonderful mother who wholly supports her daughter’s ambitions to become a model. Here is an interview we did with Sophie and the actual photoshoot done close to the Hilton Metropole in London on Sunday following her successful placing at the Top Model World Wide Search.
Name: Sophie Fraser-Smith
Born in: Bermuda, Sadly Deceased 19.07.2017
Tell us something about your country?
Bermuda is my paradise. It is a small island, soaked in tropical sunshine, isolated from larger countries. Maria Bezzina told me that Bermuda is similar to Malta because it has a very close community where everybody knows each other.
What is your greatest life ambition?
My ambitions change daily. As a model, I aspire to be in American Vogue and as a student I aim to get high grades in my summer exams and gain knowledge that will help me become a successful entrepreneur. However, as long as I’m enjoying myself the end results don’t really matter.
How did you get involved in fashion modelling in London?
I was involved in an annual Bermuda Fashion show called Evolution. Geoff Cox and the Top Model team were invited to scout girls for the Top Model Worldwide competition. I was invited to do the Top Model Commercial category in 2012. My own ambitions for the show were to try my best to look professional, look graceful and not fall off the runway. I exceeded these by receiving both the 1st Runner Up Award and the Natural Beauty Award.
You have already participated in the London Fashion Week last year. How do you describe your experience?
Through Top Model, I met Luna Sky, a designer who makes the most elegant dresses. I was invited to do London Fashion Week wearing Luna’s designs and I couldn’t have been happier. I felt like a princess trying on all Luna’s beautiful dresses. My face was painted in make-up with the ultimate goal of making me look natural, and my hair had so much spray in it, it became solid and on the runway it looked flawless! My job was simply to show off their amazing work. In the queue backstage my pulse raced, but on the runway I tried to forget about all the nerves and focus on creating a smooth elegant walk, which was harder than I expected because my legs felt like jelly. But after I leave the runway the first thing I want to do is to do it again.
You placed 3rd Runner Up in Top Model World Wide Search finals, what is the way forward?
Ideally after my AS exams this month, I would like to find an agency in London that will help me book more jobs. Besides that, I have made many friends during the Top Model competition and I look forward to working with them again.
For those who really want to go into the world of the fashion industry what is the message you want to convey?
I think the fashion industry is hard to get into because there is so much competition, but there is also such a wide range of professions within fashion and the best way to get involved is to start off small and work your way up the ladder.
