I met John Galliano way back in 2004 when I attended the ‘Smirnoff Fashion Designer Awards’ in Dublin, Ireland and he was an unknown upcoming designer who was looking for fame and fortune, trying to mingle with photographers and paparazzi to get some publicity and trying to do a lot of networking to get his name known in the fashion business. No one at that time knew who he was or who was about to become.
Working his way up, we all know that John Galliano became eventually the Creative Director of Christian Dior. After John Galliano made the infamous anti-Semitic remarks in a Paris cafe in 2010, he was fired immediately from his post, checked into rehab in Arizona, brought to trial in France, sentenced to Euro 6,000 in fines and damages, and lived quietly since then. With the exception that he designed Kate Moss’s wedding dress in July 2011, Galliano has spent the last two years away out of the limelight.
His name has popped up again recently when designer Oscar De La Renta invited John Galliano at his studio. Everyone knew that at some point he will be back and it seems he is – at least for the time being. The designer will take up a residency at Oscar de la Renta, and its being regarded as the beginning of his comeback to the front line of the fashion industry
De La Renta stated “John and I have known each other for many years and I am a great admirer of his talent, he has worked long and hard on his recovery and I am happy to give him the opportunity to reimburse himself in the world of fashion and in an environment where he has been so creative.”
‘’Everyone in life deserves a second chance, especially someone as talented as John, I think that life is about forgiving and helping people.…I think John is doing all the right things.”
De La Renta said that John Galliano will be giving his input in the upcoming collection which will be presented during the New York Fashion Week in February 2013.
