“I am not attracted to straight angles or to the straight line, hard and inflexible, created by man. I am attracted to free-flowing, sensual curves.
The curves that I find in the mountains of my country, in the sinuousness of its rivers, in the waves of the ocean, and on the body of the beloved woman. Curves make up the entire Universe, the curved Universe of Einstein”.
(Niemeyer, Oscar, 2000, The Curves of Time: The Memoirs of Oscar Niemeyer (London: Phaidon), pp. 62 and 169-70)
On the 15th of December this year, Niemeyer would have turned 105 years old. He died at the beginning of the month leaving the world his architecture masterpieces.
Curves were his signature style and we can associate the source of inspiration of this visionary architect with a love for the female form.
For this reason I would like to share with you some of Niemeyer’s sketches that became available only a few years ago.
