Malta Mediterranean Literature Festival 2013
The VIIIth edition of the Malta Mediterranean Literature Festival will be held on Thursday, 29, Friday 30th and Saturday 31st August, at the Msida Bastion Historic Garden, in FLORIANA, with the participation of Angela Bonanno (Sicily),Tsead Bruinja (Netherlands), Maria Grech Ganado (Malta), Khaled Khalifa (Syria), Mazen Maarouf (Palestine), Nikola Madzirov (Macedonia, FYROM), Immanuel Mifsud (Malta), Denisa Mirena Piscu(Romania), Monique Roffey (UK), Karl Schembri (Malta/Gaza), and Fahredin Shehu (Kosova).
Entrance to all events is free. Short films from Reel Festivals will be shown on every night and presented by Caldon Mercieca.
The writers will be in Malta throughout the last week of August to take part in the LAF Malta Literary Translation Workshop. They will be translating each other’s works into their languages, and reading some of these translations during the three nights of the festival.
This year’s festival will also feature an art installation by Pierre Portelli on the theme of fresh Water. Portelli is also the designer of the Festival’s logo and printed programme. This theme is also being discussed by Nathalie Grima and Virginia Monteforte with documentary photographs and interviews they are holding with stakeholders specifically for this edition of the Festival. Nathalie Grima and Virginia Monteforte have recently worked together on the project Din Mhix Tazza held in Bormla.
Guitarist Jes Psaila, drummer Michael Galea, and vocalist and musician Justin Galea will be performing with Tsead Bruinja on Thursday and Friday, while the jazz duo of Joe Debono on piano and Manuel Pulis on drums will be playing on Saturday night.
This year’s festival will also see the launch of a new book in Maltese published by Inizjamed and edited by Clare Azzopardi and Albert Gatt, Klijenti Antipatiċi u Kapuċċini Kesħin. This is a collection of short stories by international writers who have taken part in the festival over the years. The works are by Ghazi Gheblawi (trans. Walid Nabhan and Clare Azzopardi), Polona Glavan (Karl Schembri), Kallia Papadaki (Clare Azzopardi), Valerio Cruciani (Clare Azzopardi), Valda Berzina Melgalve (Maria Grech Ganado), Mona El Shemy (Clare Azzopardi), Roman Simić (Immanuel Mifsud and Clare Azzopardi), Youssef Rakha (Nadia Mifsud and Pierre J. Mejlak), Tarek Eltayeb (Clare Azzopardi), and Jordi Puntí (Immanuel Mifsud). This book has been designed by artist Pierre Portelli.
