LOCAL COMPANY SAVES 150,000 BOTTLES BY SHIFTING TO GLASS

We have recently shown what contributions consumers can make to avoid plastic waste. Businesses are making a difference, too. Talbot & Bons has drastically reduced the use of plastic through its restaurant, and made substantial eco-friendly changes across the board.

It can be difficult for companies to take the plunge when it comes to reducing their plastic use and switching to environmentally-friendly practices. However, Talbot & Bons, at Sky Parks, chose to reduce as much as possible single-use plastic, and the results have been staggering. In fact, the company estimates that since 2016, when they made the decision, they have saved over 150,000 plastic bottles from being sold and have, instead, shifted completely to glass bottles instead.

The eatery sees thousands of customers come through its doors every month. “Most of our suppliers actually provide a glass bottle option instead of a plastic one, so it wasn’t that difficult to make the shift, although we did have to make a slightly higher investment from our end,” says restaurant manager Litza Buga. “While it did take our customers and suppliers a little bit of time to get used to our requests, they have been very supportive and have come to understand our policy in the long-term. We truly believe we have a responsibility to our planet that goes beyond the convenience of using plastic bottles simply because that’s what people are used to.”

And the team at Talbot & Bons haven’t stopped there. With an eco-focused strategy led by owners Amy Talbot and Alan Bons, the team has also switched from plastic coffee stirrers to wooden ones, and has replaced all of their take away materials (including take away boxes and coffee cups) with cardboard ones, which can be recycled. They have also ditched plastic bags in favour of paper ones and, have even asked their suppliers to embrace this movement with them. In fact, when ordering items in – like specially-decorated cakes – these are now delivered in cardboard containers, even though the supplier uses plastic as standard.

“Beyond that, we have trained our team to reduce plastic in other ways and we recycle as much as we can. We have even encouraged our team to recycle at home, and it’s wonderful to see them getting excited about the simple changes they’re making that make a huge difference.”

Going yet another step further, the team at Talbot & Bons has also been committed to the annual initiative, Earth Hour. “We have been part of Earth Hour since 2012, and our whole team gets very excited about it. Yes, it can be challenging to work in almost-complete darkness, but we have always managed. We now invite the public to embrace this event too and to join us on 24 March to spend an hour in the dark in support of this initiative, which is part of a vital worldwide movement.”
