REVENGE PORN – KNOW YOUR RIGHTS

One of the hardest things in life is not only going through a broken promise, but also witnessing a shared and consensual moment of intimacy being exploited and mocked.

Revenge porn is no laughing matter, and it can ruin a person’s life. Nonetheless, there is help out there, and we’re lucky that the distribution of such material is a crime in Malta, and has been so since last year. To distribute private material that portrays a person’s genitals with or without their consent is illegal, and anyone sharing that material is considered to be an accomplice.

Moreover, you must remember that revenge porn is another form of body shaming. Similar to the distribution of private nude pictures, it is an act designed to humiliate the victim through bribery and blackmail. But let us not forget that our bodies are nothing to be ashamed of, and neither is our sexuality. One of the first steps that you should take in such circumstances is to remember that you are the sole owner of your body, and you should own and embrace it. Wear it like armour, and that way, no one can use it against you.

Nonetheless, it is a traumatic experience that will affect not just you but also your family and friends. But do remember that you are not to blame for simply having trusted a person. It is those who’ve broken your trust that are in the wrong.

If you ever find yourself to be in such a situation, please seek help and contact agencies such as the Women’s Rights Foundation on info@wrf.org.mt, and notify the authorities and the police as soon as possible. These are people in power who know your rights and can help you put a stop to the exposed material and your worries.
