With summer fast approaching, you may be looking forward to getting a nice tan. However, some of us aren’t naturally blessed with olive skin, or prefer to fake it. Nowadays there’s a wide range of products you can get to achieve sunless tanning at home in a whole variety or shades, but getting it right can often prove to be difficult. As many can vouch, you could end up with patchy tan or orange knees. Below are some tips on how you can acquire and maintain the perfect fake tan.
Before you apply fake tan, it’s recommended that you have a good exfoliation session before for an even finish. Don’t forget your back! Also, make sure you moisturise straight after, and pay attention to problem areas such as knees, elbows and ankles.
On the day of tanning, ensure you have clean skin with no oil-based lotions on. If you had forgotten to moisturise, now is the time to put a little on your knees, elbows and ankles.
Once you’ve applied your fake tan – as annoying as it is – try to air dry until you’re completely dry. It’s usually easiest to apply tan before bed and to let it develop overnight, but do try to avoid any tight clothing such as bras, otherwise you’ll end up with marks.
Your tan should last around 5 to 10 days. The best way to maintain a fake tan is to moisturise, and if you feel it’s fading a little, you can top it up with a daily gradual tanner.
It’s also recommended that at least once a month, you have a bit of a fake-tan detox and go a few days without it. It’s also a good time to have another good exfoliation session. If you’re worried about looking pale, you can always opt for a wash-off tan for a few days, until you start all over again.
