DIY HALLOWEEN – LUMINARY DECORATIONS

Forgot to get your pumpkins? Don’t really fancy digging out the insides of a pumpkin and getting your hands dirty?

Have no fear… Although, that somehow doesn’t really tie in with the Halloween spirit. But nonetheless, fret not.

We’ve got two fantastic alternatives to jack-o’-lanterns which are quick and easy to make, and do not require any sort of de-gutting. We’ll leave the horror movie protagonists to that task.

DIY Pumpkin Luminary Decoration

You will need:

  • Smooth Glass Jar
  • Orange crepe paper
  • Decoupage Glue (Mod Podge)
  • Green Ribbon
  • Black paper
  • Sponge Applicator
  • Small candle

Step #1: Measure the length of the jar from the lip to the bottom. Add around 3cm to that measurement. Cut out strips of orange crepe paper in this length. The strips should be about 3.5cm / 1.5inches wide.

Step #2: Now you’ll be coating the jar with these strips of crepe. Coat a section of the jar, from the lip to the bottom, with decoupage glue. Take a strip of orange crepe paper and gently press it against the glue. Make sure the top edge of the paper touches the rim of the jar. Repeat this step until you’ve coated the entire jar, and make sure that the strips slightly overlap each other, in order to create the effect of pumpkin ridges.

Step #3: Repeat the above step over the first layer of crepe paper. Apply the decoupage glue with a sponge applicator, as things could get messy.

Step #4: Turn the jar upside down and allow it to dry.

Step #5: From the black paper, cut out two small triangles for the eyes and a toothy grin like the one in the picture. Once the jar is completely dry, adhere these on top of the crepe paper with a dab of decoupage glue.

Step #6: Dab a bit of glue along the jar opening, just enough to hold down the green ribbon that will go around it.

Step #7: Light a small candle and gently place it inside the jar.

DIY Mummy Luminary Decoration

You will need:

  • Smooth Glass Jar
  • Cheesecloth or white gauze
  • Clear liquid glue
  • A pair of googly eyes
  • Brown ink or diluted brown paint

Step #1: Cut the cheesecloth strips about 2 inches wide.

Step #2: Apply a good amount of glue to the bottom of the jar, enough to secure a good section of the cheesecloth. Once you’ve stuck that on, wind the cheesecloth strips around the jar, overlapping them as you go along. Apply glue to the end of the cheesecloth and press tightly to secure around the rim of the jar.

Step #3: Glue the googly eyes to the front of the jar on top of the cheesecloth. Slightly tuck them into the fabric so that they’re peeking out.

Step #4: With a cotton bud, dab the edges of the cheesecloth strips to create a stained effect.
