Is Eloping Becoming Fashionable?

Naya Rivera and Ryan Dorsey Alexis Bledel and Vincent Kartheiser

It seems celebrities lately have been going behind the backs of paparazzi and friends alike, to tie the knot in secret, away from prying eyes. Although eloping in the past used to refer to running away to get married, now it is a term that is mostly used to describe a small and intimate wedding, with only a small handful of people in attendance.

Lately, both ‘Glee’ actress, Naya Rivera and ‘Mad Men’ star Vincent Kartheiser have secretly married their respective partners away from the public eye. Rivera married actor boyfriend, Ryan Dorsey in a whirlwind wedding in Cabo San Lucas Mexico, just three months after she ended her engagement to ex-fiancé, Big Sean. Kartheiser, on the other hand, married former ‘Gilmore Girls’ star, Alexis Bledel. The duo, who met on the set of ‘Mad Men’ back in 2012, kept their relationship very private. They reportedly got married earlier this summer, in California.

Although this is a far cry from the cheapskate drunken Vegas weddings, it still makes you wonder. What is it about eloping that is so attractive to couples? Truth be told, even though the media portrays weddings as this perfect day brimming with happiness, this age-old tradition is more likely to bring about high expectations and stress. It will also very likely cost you an arm and a leg to see it through, although this might not be of the greatest concern to successful celebrities. Maybe, eloping is the best solution that ensures that this monumental day in the couple’s life is focused only on the bride and groom. Moreover, we feel it’s kind of romantic to run away with your loved one! Sorry mums and dads.
