5 Beauty Trends for Autumn 2013

Matte Skin Soft Grey Eyes Glittery Eyes Wine Lips Cat Eyes

As autumn makes it presence known, beauty trends take on a more sophisticated feel with darker hues and paler complexions.

However, this year, make-up is more playful and verging onto the femme fatale side rather than rock chic.

The following 5 beauty trends were the most common to be seen all over the catwalks complimenting the Fall/Winter ’13 collections showcased in the most popular fashion weeks around the globe. Read on to see how you can recreate the looks yourselves.

Matte Skin – Contrary to last year’s dewy skin, this autumn it’s all about a smooth complexion that will take you from day to night effortlessly. To achieve this, you will need a matte finish foundation such as Estee Lauder Double Wear Foundation. You will also need a make-up sponge such as the Beauty Blender or a stippling brush to apply the foundation with. Alternatively, you can set your usual foundation with matte powder or else opt for a matte setting spray such as NYX Matte Finish Setting Spray. A cheaper alternative to the Estee Lauder foundation is the Maybelline Dream Matte Mousse Foundation.

Soft Grey Eyes – Smoky eyes are assuming a softer finish this season and it seems the latest trend is to move away from the usual black smoky eye and go for grey hues instead. You are aiming for a soft wash of grey over the entire eyelid so a stiff dome shaped brush is a must for perfect blending of the colour up to the crease. Experiment with a light shade such as Catrice Absolute Eye Colour Mono 690 Snoop Dovey Dove for daytime or MAC Scene for a more dramatic effect for night time.

Glittery Eyes – This one is definitely not for the faint-hearted or everyday use but it is still a fun look to experiment with, come holiday season. It may be a little trickier to apply but once you have a good glitter adhesive (suitable for cosmetic use) and a stiff brush to pick up the glitter with, you should be master of the glitterati in no time! If you think all over glitter is too much, you can always use a glitter eyeliner on the upper or lower lash lines!

Wine Lips – Wine coloured lips is a seasonal staple but the key to achieving this year’s look is to actually stain the lips rather than coat them full-on with lipstick. You can work your way around this trend in two ways; (i) try an actual lip-stain such as Catrice Liquid Lip Tint 030 Are You Red-y? or (ii) apply your favourite wine lipstick with a small flat brush. This will also help the lipstick last longer. My personal favourites are Max Factor 710 Midnight Plum and Make Up Store Black Currant.

Cat Eyes – This is another trend that has been revamped. The key colour to rock the new take on the cat-eye is cobalt blue. Gel eyeliner is your best bet and a bent eyeliner brush will ease application. To get the perfect cat-eye wing, use scotch tape as a guide. Simply roll it on the back of your hand to remove excessive stickiness and use your lower lash line as a guide when attaching it. Subsequently, follow the tape line with gel eyeliner for a flawless line. Don’t forget to take it off when you’re finished though ;)

So that’s Autumn 2013 summarised in terms of beauty! Which is your favourite trend? Are you willing to try something new?
